刺盖鱼科（Pomacanthidae）体卵形或菱形，侧扁。具强栉鳞。口小，端位，口裂水平。前鳃盖骨具锯齿，后小角向后延成一大强棘。背鳍连续，具9～15根棘，15～37根软鳍条；臀鳍3根棘，14～25根鳍条；尾鳍后缘圆形或弯月形。鳃盖条15根。本科常作为
蝴蝶鱼科
（Chaetodontidae）的一亚科，即刺盖鱼亚科（Pomacanthinae），区别在于刺盖鱼前鳃盖骨后下角有1强大硬棘，且腹鳍无腋鳞。全世界有9属74种。我国产8属30种。主要分布在珊瑚礁区。幼鱼与成鱼体有显著的差异。
